APOSW Awards


The Association of Pediatric Oncology Social Workers in conjunction with The Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation, award sponsor, is proud to recognize APOSW members who demonstrate exemplary services in the field of pediatric oncology. Awards will be presented during the 2021 Annual Conference in Louisville, Kentucky and will only be presented for the categories in which nominations are submitted. Please consider the nominee’s ability to travel to receive the award.

Social Worker Of The Year Award

Recognizes a social worker who excels in the field of pediatric oncology social work, who has made an outstanding contribution and impact within their scope of practice. Nominee should:

  • Be an APOSW member in good standing for three or more years
  • Have an MSW degree
  • Demonstrate significant leadership skills and exemplary service within their hospital, team, organization or community as related to the field of pediatric oncology social work. Exemplary service can be in the form of one or more of the following: administrative, clinical skills, program development or community development and contributions as a multi-disciplinary team member.
  • Contribute to APOSW by presenting a peer-reviewed poster, breakout, intensive or advanced practice or pre-conference session, serve as a SIG facilitator, or session monitor at the annual conference, submit article(s) for the quarterly newsletter, serve as a designated representative to another organization, or serve on a committee or the Board of Directors.
  • Cannot not be a past recipient of the APOSW Social Worker of the Year Award
  • Previously nominated individuals who did not receive the award are eligible to be re-nominated
  • Current members can self-nominate

Emerging Rookie of the Year Award

The award is presented to an emerging social worker who has worked in pediatric oncology for less than three years and has uniquely demonstrated abilities in leadership, clinical acumen and strong interdisciplinary skills. Nominee should be:

  • An APOSW member in good standing for three years or less
  • MSW degree
  • Served in the field of pediatric oncology social work for no more three years
  • Cannot be a past recipient of the APOSW Emerging Rookie of the Year Award
  • Current members can self-nominate

A minimum of four APOSW members will serve as independent, blind reviewers who score each nomination form and supporting documentation. Scores are tabulated by the Immediate Past President or the Quality of Life Chair. Individuals can only be nominated for one award category per year. Award recipients receive a recognition plaque and monetary gift. Runners-up will be informed of their nomination following the awards ceremony and are eligible to be re-nominated in subsequent years.
